In 2002, Hellen Nkurayia – Masaai, the founder of Enkiteng Lepa, started a program for rescuing young girls from circumcision. While circumcision is officially prohibited by the Kenyan government, many Maasai continue the practice as part of their culture and rite of passage for girls.
A former government teacher, Hellen knew that the best way to protect the girls was to enroll them in boarding school where they are cared for, educated, and under the protection of the Kenyan government. Rescued girls live in the boarding school when school is in session, and in a home provided by Salaton Ole Ntutu in the Widow’s village while on school breaks.
